Pull-Ups are okay but they are too much like diapers. They feel like diapers to a kid and they will go in them because they don't feel any different. Try going commando or with cotton panties only. There will be accidents but they will learn a lot quicker. If you have tile in your house, that makes it a lot easier. Play in the backyard instead of inside will help with the mess. Also a park with lots of changes of cloths should help.
We did the push to the deadline thing and it totally backfired. It became a control issue and a fight. We backed off and peer pressure won out in the end.
